Whoa! WordPress changed its web interface to look more like its mobile one/like Tumblr. They might’ve done this a little while ago but I only noticed now. I’m a little disoriented — I had gotten used to the two column layout on desktop and I actually really disliked the mobile WP layout, which seems more oriented to browsing other blogs than posting. If I redid the WP mobile UX, I would probably focus more on ease of posting, especially photo posting, which seems so convenient when coupled with posting images directly from phone. Tumblr does photo posting well; WP could take a leaf out of Tumblr’s book there. ALSO, I noticed that WordPress.com only limits options to “Insert Photo” (no other media) – is this unique just to WordPress.com?

I heard about Ghost, a simple blogging platform meant only for blogging, so in a very Jenny circa 2004-esque way(1), I fell over myself to get an account and actually snagged http://ghost.org/jenny. (Hyperventilate) I don’t know if Ghost will pick up like WP did but I know the cautionary tale of @N and now I’m wondering if I should go register http://ghost.org/j or something(2). The creators of Ghost have worked on the WordPress project before and mentioned WP’s ambitions on becoming more than just a blogging platform (taking a turn for the Medium, perhaps?) I want to try out Ghost but I’m not really sure what I’d put on it — I’m way too invested in WP to move my main blog over. I even imported all my old Xanga posts here (and they are hidden for nobody to see, yep).
One idea that I never thought would resurface again is participating in NaNiWriMo in November. I used to think about it when I was younger (same time period as when I had enough time to dick around with 15 blogs) I just finished “The Happiness Project” by Gretchen Rubin (upon Priya’s recommendation) and while I was thoroughly disappointed by the book, the author did mention participating in NaNiWriMo, which is legit. Also, when I got Bonchon with Anish and Danila earlier this year, Leslie came by and mentioned she was working on her “life’s work”, which was a novel she was writing and that had such a powerful impact. I don’t really need a magnum opus; I just want to put out something, but the idea was definitely incepted over a decade ago and has recently been drumming close to home…
Notes:
(1) I was really into trying new publishing platforms in 2003-2004. That is among my more esoteric hobbies but I was a big fan of this small community called philosophy.nu that shut down, and I got on WordPress while it was still b2. That’s when I first started dealing with the struggle that is PHP/MySQL, when I knew zero programming. This is also why I had something like 15 blogs and was so prolific in my writing as a teenager a humongous nerd. =)
(2) Ghost limits to 3 characters, I did try to get the username “j” but failed.
